Patrick Soon-Shiong

Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong is a South African-born Chinese American physician, surgeon, scientist, inventor, and philanthropist. He is currently Chairman of the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Chang Soon-Shiong Institute for Advanced Health, National LambdaRail, the Healthcare Transformation Institute and NantWorks, LLC.
 
Dr. Soon-Shiong has pioneered revolutionary treatments in diabetes and cancer, is a named inventor on more than 50 patents, and the author of more than 100 papers. He has developed and sold two multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical companies.
 
Dr. Soon-Shiong serves on the Boards of Directors of the Mendez National Institute of Transplantation and the Technology Council for the Center of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence at Northwestern University. He is Chairman of the National Coalition for Health Integration and the Executive Director of the UCLA Wireless Health Institute.
 
Dr. Soon-Shiong and his wife, Michele B. Chan, are among the nation’s most generous philanthropists. Through the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation, they have made extraordinary gifts. For instance, they have pledged $1 billion to support the transformation of healthcare in the United States, have given $135 million to the Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, and have provided $100 million to facilitate the reopening of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital in South Los Angeles. They have also endowed a new Chair at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering to support research at the intersection of engineering and medicine.

In 2010, in partnership with the Los Angeles Business Journal, Dr. Soon-Shiong founded the Patrick Soon-Shiong Innovation Awards which are awarded annually to residents of Greater Los Angeles on the basis of accomplishment in a range of fields.
 
Dr. Soon-Shiong is a co-owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and, we understand, enjoys boogie boarding.
 
Dr. Soon-Shiong and his wife are among the nation’s wealthiest individuals who have signed The Giving Pledge, an initiative launched by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. Through taking The Giving Pledge, Dr. Soon-Shiong and Ms. Chan have committed to giving the majority of their wealth to the philanthropic causes and charitable organizations of their choice either during their lifetimes or after their deaths. They explained their reason for signing the Giving Pledge in the following statement.
