Milken Institute

About

A nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank, the Milken Institute (Institute) believes in the power of capital markets to solve urgent social and economic challenges and improve lives. The Institute improves lives around the world by advancing innovative economic and policy solutions that create jobs, widen access to capital and enhance health.

At the heart of the organization’s work is the idea that societies prosper if they have an educated, healthy workforce; open and efficient capital markets; and effective social institutions. Whether the issue is building a more sustainable energy future or ensuring that entrepreneurs can access the credit they need to grow their companies and create jobs, the Institute’s objective is to advance solutions that create prosperity in all corners of the globe.

The Institute has a unique vantage point on the fast-moving changes that are transforming our world. Its Santa Monica headquarters places the Institute in the heart of the nation's largest economy, close to its leading centers of innovation and on the edge of the Pacific Rim. From the Institute’s Washington offices, it informs crucial policy discussions, from the capital markets to the medical research enterprise.

The Institute stands for great ideas and effective action -- not ideology. It builds consensus around practical strategies to solve urgent challenges, from jumpstarting innovation in medical research to creating more sustainable housing markets. The Institute employs the following main strategies:

Research
The Institute’s ambitious research agenda tackles the issues that matter in a complex and interconnected global economy. It explores the intersection of finance, business, philanthropy and policy to determine how public and private investment can drive progress.

All of its work underscores the importance of human capital.  A thriving economy requires a healthy workforce. The Institute is committed to exploring critical issues in health economics, from the impact of obesity to regulatory and financing challenges in the biomedical industry.

Widely recognized as an authority on regional economics, the Institute focuses on the factors that drive job creation and the public policies that foster sustainable economic growth, such as its work on the importance of the entertainment industry on the Los Angeles and California economies – or on research that touches on issues of great importance to this region, such as housing and transportation infrastructure.

Convening
The Milken Institute brings together influential decision-makers who put great ideas to work in the marketplace and around the world. From its flagship Global Conference to private meetings and retreats in the United States and around the world, it convenes experts from multiple sectors, geographies and viewpoints for highly focused interactions. The Institute’s events are designed to move capital, policy and momentum toward realistic solutions.
